In our newest series of blogs, the theme is “what it’s like to fly for” a particular airline.
The AirlinePrep team have accumulated thousands of hours working for major UK and international airlines and we are well connected through our previous clients to other airlines.
In this blog, we talk about ‘what it’s like to fly for Jet2’ and provide some basic recruitment info.
Jet2.com is a leading leisure airline primarily based in the north of the UK with recent expansion to the South of the UK in 2017.
What started 30 years ago as Channel Express, Jet2.com rebranded in 2003 and began leisure flights from Leeds Bradford Airport using the nostalgic callsign ‘Channex’ which is still used today. Now an award winning airline, Jet2.com operate scheduled flights to New York, the Mediterranean, Canary Islands and many European cities. They also provide a charter service to sister company jet2holidays which offer package holidays to sun, ski and city destinations.
With orders for new B737-800NG, two new UK bases (BHX and STN) and the slogan ‘friendly low fares’ jet2.com has earned its place as the fourth largest scheduled airline in the UK.
Aircraft, Routes and Flying
Jet2.com have a fleet of Boeing 757 and 737 aircraft, including both 737-300 and 737-800NG. Acquiring aircraft from different sources means that they have differing flight deck layouts even on the same type, giving pilots a greater understanding of the evolution of the 737. This also creates challenges for the flight crew especially those operating both -300 and -800 series.
Routes variety is plenty, with over 50 European destinations, including short city sectors (Amsterdam or Paris) to longer Mediterranean sectors including Paphos.
Rostering varies from base to base, all however include both home and airport standby duties. Roster is published in accordance with EASA FTLs and is released to give at least a month ahead (longer over Christmas and New Years). There is limited roster disruption, though this does occasionally occur in the busier summer season. The winter roster is MUCH quieter with a majority of standby duties outnumbering only a few flying sectors each month.
Jet2.com have a brilliant leave system to enable as fair allocation as possible. This includes rotating priority as well as HR assistants checking what has been allocated to tweak in favour of crew preference as much as possible.
Opportunities and Training
Jet2.com offers a range of opportunities right at the joining stage including the fantastic Pilot Apprentice scheme where new recruits spend time working in many different departments to gain a greater understanding of the airline’s operation. Training opportunities are in abundance and with 34 aircraft on order this is a fantastic time to join the expanding company.
European bases are now on offer including Palma and Alicante, either year round or Summer season placements.
With a brand new state-of-the-art training centre in Leeds, training opportunities exist for all pilots including both ground and sim training. Jet2.com can deliver bespoke training programs in house with specific high-tech computer based training, something not all airlines offer and this I can vouch for.
Simulator training is moving from the traditional 6 month recurrent checks to annual, all of which take place in the Leeds training centre.
Jet2.com recruit pilot apprentices as well as direct entry First Officers and Captains.
Direct entry pilots require current hours on type and specific hour requirements as shown in the company recruitment website.
As a pilot apprentice you will initially be based in Leeds at the commercial office ‘Low Fare Finder House’. Pilot Apprentices then move around all departments gaining experience in aspects of the company including jet2holidays, HR and engineering. From there you will move to Cabin Crew, then flight planning and then crew room management. The course lasts up to 12 months after which you will be offered a fully bonded type rating on either Boeing 737 or Boeing 757 to become a Second Officer.
Interview Assessment includes the following:
- Online Verbal, Mathematical and Personality tests to be completed at home prior to assessment day.
- Group exercise, computer-based Compass tests and then an interview.
Jet2.com has a great sense of family and teamwork throughout. This is seen by line pilots from Crewing conversations and justification about standby call outs to welcoming crew rooms.
