Flying for easyJet as a Pilot

In our newest series of blogs, the theme is “what it’s like to fly for” a particular airline.

The AirlinePrep team have accumulated thousands of hours working for major UK and international airlines and we are well connected through our previous clients to other airlines.

In this blog, we talk about ‘what it’s like to fly for easyJet’ and provide some basic recruitment info.

The Airline

easyJet has a fleet of over 200 aircraft, currently all A319's and A320's. The company has just received its first A320 NEO and has announced it has placed orders for the A321 NEO. There are currently more than 2800 pilots and 6500 cabin crew employed by easyJet, distributed around the 26 bases across the UK and Europe. easyJet operate over 800 routes and fly to 31 different countries across Europe.

Aircraft, Routes and Flying 

easyJet is a great airline to fly for with a huge variation of flying and personnel. Almost every time you go to work, chances are you’ll be meeting a new captain and four crew, especially if you work at a large base such as LGW. Typically a working day will consist of 2 or 4 sectors, with the occasional 3 sector which results in a night stop in a  European city.

Two sector days typically involve sectors to destinations further afield such as Paphos, Larnaca, Hurghada and the Canaries. Four sector days could be UK to Alicante and back followed by UK to Amsterdam and back.
All sectors have to be completed within EASA flight time limitations.

Rostering

For flexi-crew pilots, second and first officers, the roster is a flexible pattern. The maximum block anyone can do is 5 days and the maximum amount of block hours per month is 100.

Once senior first officer and captain is reached, the pattern goes to 5 lates, 4 days off, 5 earlies, 3 days off. As of April 2018 there is a preferential bidding system which allows each pilot to state whether they would prefer to do earlies or lates month by month. The summer rostering is obviously more tiring as there are more routes.
Due to the size of the operation, roster instability can occur but this is just one of the pitfalls of being a Pilot with any airline. Occasionally there are times when you just need to be flexible. 

Everyone gets 144 days off per year and 28 leave days which are secured via a bidding system. Unlike a lot of airlines, seniority doesn't have anything to do with leave or route bidding. 

Opportunities and Training

Because easyJet are so accustomed to recruiting FO's straight out of flight school, the standard of training is excellent and tailored to very low hour pilots, and once online the captains are all very accepting of someone with such little experience which really allows you to flourish and develop your skills. Pilots have to do a 2 day simulator check every 6 months. 

As it stands, you fly for a year as 'second officer', two years as 'first officer' then 'senior first officer' and shortly after that, providing you display the skills and attributes to a professional standard, it'll be time for a command course. It's expected to take about 5 to 6 years from starting on flexi-crew to command. Keep in mind that a Command is a privilege awarded by the Company to suitable individuals. It is not a right for First Officers to be awarded one.

There are plenty of opportunities for pilots, such as base first officer/captain, training first officer, line training captain, sim trainer, recruiter, CRM instructor, pilot welfare manager etc. 

Recruitment 

Flight school graduates can expect to join on a flexi-crew contract. On completion of the flexi-crew contract (approximately one year) cadet pilots can expect an interview with one of the company recruiters to go onto permanent contract with easyJet themselves. 

The recruitment process consists of an online test which offers a few various scenarios and a range of options to chose from. Then it's just an interview with one of the company recruiters who wants to hear why you want to be a pilot and why you want to fly for easyJet in particular, examples of when you've demonstrated situational awareness, decision making, cooperation, leadership and once of easyJet's values (safety, one team, passion, integrity, simplicity, pioneering) and then what you bring to the company. 

easyJet also offers opportunities for direct entry captains and FO’s and the recruitment process for these pilots is similar to the cadet pilots above:
  • an online scenario test
  • a Skype interview for Captains
  • invite to an assessment day to partake in a group exercise and interview
  • a simulator assessment
